Your special occasion wear should make you feel special

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

Most of us want to look our best when we receive an invitation to some event. It is for this reason that many of us have special occasion wear – we want to be as prepared as possible when the invitations for brunches, weddings and opera nights arrive. These generally occur during all times of the year but they seem to be even more popular during the hotter months.

We want to impress, sure, but we mostly want to feel a little bit more glamorous when we attend some event than on other days. Gone are the loose ponytails and the scruffy T-shirts and we reach for the little black dress, a sparkly cardigan and the pair of heels that can support our feet for an entire evening of dancing.

The surest way to feeling glamorous is to invest in something sparkly and glittery. This can be done even if you are a woman ‘of a certain age’. This special occasion wear makes us feel youthful, beautiful and mature all at the same time. Now is the time to invest in a sparkly cardigan or a dress with a mere suggestion of glitters that suit grown-ups. Your other options are to wear items that defy, invert or bend the rules just ever so slightly: tasteful mini-dresses, skinny jeans with heels, and dresses that show off your arms. Feel free to experiment in this regard.

Your accessories are also very important in this respect. You have a number of choices in this instance: wear items that complement your outfit or wear items that contrast. Choose one of these and run with it. This will make you either stand out or blend it. Both options can appeal to the same person but at different times. There are times when we want to stand out in our special occasion wear but sometimes we wish to blend in – at weddings that are not our own, for example.

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

Going out for drinks with your colleagues or catching up with your friends after work is one of the best ways to get through the week. But it really is a mission to go home and change your outfit before hitting the town. Therefore you need the right outfit that is suitable for both day and night wear. Here we offer 8 tips on ways to transform your work wear into a fun and sophisticated night time outfit:

Shop for quality basics, like statement dresses, blazers, black pants, white blouses, and versatile pumps. These items are great for work, and can be accessorized for night wear. All you have to do is throw on some earrings, necklaces and bangles and you’re good to go.

Wear bright colours on drink days

If you have plans on hitting the streets after work, where a bright top that screams for attention. Find out what colours look good on you and match your outfit accordingly.

Make the centre of your outfit your dress

There are many dresses available that are appropriate for work and play, but are still fashionable. Dresses also work much better than pants when it comes to showing off your shoes. If you feel a sexy pair of heels is too much for work, bring along an extra pair and slip them on before going out for the night.

Accessorise

Smart daywear for work should be easy and simple, not busy. Night wear is the time to show off your flashy side. Statement accessories can do wonders in transforming an otherwise dull outfit into something that demands attention. Keep a chunky necklace in your bag, and come the evening, throw it on and enjoy the evening.

Move your belt from your hip to your waist

Waist belts are all the rage these days, so why not cash in on the trend? Not only that, it gives your body more shape, and you can get away with it at work as well.  A thin, brightly coloured belt can add life to a simple black pants and classic white shirt.

Wear outfits that can deconstruct

Wear smart daywear that can deconstruct – shirts that can unbutton, or even colour sleeves peeking out from rolled up sleeves. This is great for taking smart daywear into sophisticated night wear.

Whether you are sitting behind a desk or standing behind a bar, the top part of your outfit is the part most often seen. Take time to search for tops and dresses that make you feel sexy and confident.

Choose an outfit that works well with both formal and casual hair

Clothing and hairstyles have got to compliment each other. If you are confident in your smart daywear, all you can do is re-do your hair and you’re good to go.

There is certainly no reason why you cannot wear your smart daywear into the night. All you have to do is take time to think about your outfit and your can easily go from day into night.

Designs for women who are vase shaped

October 31, 2010 by Mary Smith

Most of us know what the hourglass shape looks like but not many of us know what a vase shaped woman looks like. These women share the basic shape of an hourglass but there is one main difference: their arms and busts are generally heavier and their waists and hips are generally much wider than their thighs. Their tummies are also much flatter than that of the hourglass.

While few of us even knew these figures existed, it is also true that even fewer of us know which designs vase-shaped women should wear.

So these bodies are generally just an hourglass with a few modifications. How, then, should women who have this body shape dress? Should they follow the advice that beauty and fashion magazines dish out to hourglass shapes and just modify it slightly? Or should they disregard that advice, and instead, look for advice that is specific to their bodies?

The answer may be in the second assumption that we made: find advice that targets your body shape because there will then be no need to modify it to suit you better. You will feel wonderful no matter what you’re wearing and this will translate into greater confidence that you can use to tackle everything anyone throws at you.

Wrap dresses

It is true that wrap dresses look good on nearly any figure but it is especially true for vase-shaped figures. The dresses hug the curves and flatters women with large breasts especially well.

V-shaped necklines

This type of neckline is one of the most sensible designs for vase shaped women. It helps to create the illusion of smaller breasts.

Pencil-cut skirts

These skirts emphasise the bottom half so it makes sense to wear such skirts if you wish to draw the attention away from the upper portion of your body.

Straight leg jeans

This can also apply to regular pants. Try to stay away from skinny pants. There are many other designs for vase-shaped women that you can try out, one of which is pants that are straight-legged.

A look back at clothing of the seventies

October 31, 2010 by Mary Smith

Fashion trends in the early seventies were heavily influenced by the sixties.  The 60s was full of radical changes, both in culture and fashion. It was all this chaos and change that opened up the doors for increased creativity and exploration in the fashions of the 70s.

On of the main fashion influences of the seventies was Rock and Roll musicians. Instead of following fashion trends, these musicians set them. Seventies clothes therefore will always be remembered as free-spirited, diverse and fun-loving.

The 1970s started off with a continuation of the popular sixties hippie look – tie dyed shirts, bell bottoms and frayed jeans. Seventies clothes consisted of people taking the hippie culture a new and interesting level – instead of buying bell bottoms and tie dyed garments, they would make their own. The flamboyant fashions of rockers like Elton John and David Bowie were also gaining in popularity.

Seventies clothes also saw the rise of ethnic fashions, with garments from the Far East like turbans and kimonos popping up. Also, this was the age of the Afro.

But probably the biggest musical influence on seventies fashion was disco music. But while disco clothing was popular, it was not considered appropriate day wear. Disco clothing was designed for the nightclub setting – therefore ease of movement and comfort was essential. Clothing features stretchy materials such as spandex or Lycra. Also popular was gold hot pants, mini skirts, leopard prints, zipped jumpsuits, sequined tube tops and satin jackets – all designed to be eye-catching. And of course, who can forget those platform shoes?

But by the end of the 70s, disco clothing began to wane in popularity, opening the door to new and emerging fashion trends. Casual pants went high-waisted, with women choosing flared leg denim pants and skirts. However, by the end of the seventies, straight leg jeans were fashionable. Tennis shoes also became standard attire during the end of the seventies thanks to the establishment of Nike.

The Punk look was also a significant part of seventies clothes. This look features the Mohawk (which is once again becoming popular), stud collars, ripped jeans and chains.
