Why Now Is The Time To Go Bird Watching

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Ornithology and bird watching in general is a hugely popular pastime for many. In fact, the observations made by many amateurs often helps to inform the work of the professionals, so what can often seem like just a bit of fun, can also be hugely productive.

Yet, during the colder months, some are put off by what they think will be worse conditions, with potentially fewer birds and much more in the way of cloud possibly spoiling things, whilst for others the cold weather itself is the thing that makes them want to stay indoors.

However, winter and the months surrounding it are often the best time to get out and go bird watching as this is when things start to get much more interesting. There is still plenty to be learnt about the migratory habits of different birds and so the winter is the time to find out some of the most important information and see vast changes in the habits of many birds in a very short time.

To get out there, all you really need is a good pair of binoculars, and if possible a pair of dedicated bird watching binoculars. It also helps to get yourself a guide book and start learning a bit of background about the different birds and their habits so that you can more quickly learn to see when behaviour is different to that which you might expect.

However, whatever reason you might have for wanting to get those bird watching binoculars out, whether it is specifically for study or simply just to observe the fantastic creatures as best as possible, doing so can be great any time of the year, but the winter can make it that little bit more special. So don’t let a bit of snow and rain put you off; put on an extra jumper and get out there.

Discover Your Own Planets

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Recently, scientists announced that they had discovered a planet that had physical properties similar to our own. It is in just the right position in its galaxy for water to be likely and in real terms it’s actually just around the corner from us. Okay, so around the corner is still a few hundred thousand light years away, but still, the discovery is great nonetheless.

The ability to discover new planets has accelerated at a remarkable pace, and it is now more than possible to discover new ones using astronomical telescopes in your own home. However, whilst looking for new planets, and in the process finding more and more potential ‘earths’ is one great benefit of having astronomical telescopes, there are plenty of others.

One of the best things people can get involved in from their own home with the right telescopes is helping to protect the earth. Many of the centres in the world that look at objects with the potential to cause serious damage to the earth (asteroids, comets and the like) are seriously under-funded and often require the help of amateurs to make observations for them. Not only that, but with the potential of these celestial bodies to approach the earth from any side, it is a great benefit for these centres to have people located all over the world checking out the night sky to see if there is any danger lurking out there.

Using telescopes along with computer technology to study the movement of objects is actually surprisingly easy, and you can find out more information with a simple online search. So if you want to buy telescopes to search for new planets, just bear in mind that you may be able to put a bit of time in to some other things that could benefit not only science but everyone on earth at the same time.

Buying a Telescope as a Present

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

A telescope is a popular present for Christmas or birthdays, but buying one can prove problematic for purchasers. Normally, the person buying the present is not an astronomer so they are unsure as to what qualities to look for in a telescope. The problem is that new telescopes look very nice and shiny, but the appearance will give little idea to how good it is and how well it may perform.

Toys Avoid buying telescopes which are predominately made of plastic as they are usually little more than toys. The really cheap ones may even have plastic lenses that will give poor views of anything it is supposed to observe. If a child is serious about astronomy, a toy telescope that disappoints could be enough to put them off their new hobby and the cheap present will simply end up in its box, gathering dust.

Stability A cheap telescope will also come with only a very simple, unstable tripod which makes the telescope wobble when touched. The slightest tremble will be magnified greatly while looking through the telescope, making it practically impossible to view anything properly.

Alternative If unsure about a child’s level of interest in astronomy and suspect it may be something of a passing fad, then why not buy a pair of binoculars instead. Binoculars are usually pretty good value and can be bought relatively cheaply. This way, if the child discovers that stargazing is not for them, they can use the binoculars for other activities.

Quality When buying a telescope, it makes sense to purchase a respected brand who specialise in making telescopes which include those at the less expensive end of the market. Business as usual or a new dawn

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

A certain amount of unpredictability is to be expected with any free market commodity. It is exactly this unpredictability that enables businesses, or even individuals, to make quick profits or losses and potentially secure market beating pricing. Events late in the first decade of the new millennium saw prices for commercial gas and electricity see new unprecedented highs followed shortly by fairly significant price drops.

Any business will have seen these large variances impacting their cash flow, doubtless, some will have fared better than others due to the overall strength of their business but few could claim to have been ahead of the game in managing these costs.

With the benefit of hindsight, the chaos in the global economy that begin late in 2008 could probably have been foreseen but conversely, nobody fully understands what the long term impacts will be. Some markets appear to have rapidly resumed business as usual whilst others continue to languish in challenging trading conditions.

Commercial electricity prices are heavily influenced by oil and gas prices, both of which suffered the huge drop in value in 2008 that has gradually stabilised. In order to secure competitive pricing for commercial gas and electricity, currently it is more important than ever to have a grasp of how the markets are evolving. Are the recent price drops likely to continue or are they likely to be quickly reversed to the benefit of the wholesalers and producers?

Many businesses simply lack the expert knowledge of such a specialist market. Despite the fact commercial gas and electricity are such a significant cost; there are limitations on your capacity to manage these costs. At Online Energy, our specialisation in these markets assists businesses of all sizes to secure the best available pricing and contract for their needs. This may be competitive flexible rates or long term fixed pricing.
