How good is your pet’s ID tag?

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

Now that many more people are buying pet ID tags for their pets, there are many shops that sell these products to cater to the demand that has increased in recent years. Not all of these companies sell the best quality ID tags; some sell ID tags that can only be described as sub-par in quality.

One of the things that any pet owner who is contemplating buying an ID tag for their pet should consider is that of the split ring. This little part is one that very many pet owners tend to overlook. Not everyone considers that an ID tag is only as good and strong as the split ring that it is attached to.

The worst case scenario is that the ID tag falls off because the split ring was bent out of shape or because it fell off the collar. This can have tremendous repercussions for the pet and for the pet owner alike. These are possibly a step up from the ‘s hooks’ that some companies use; however, there are benefits and disadvantages to nearly anything, and these items are no exception to this rule.

You want to ensure that the pet ID tag is fastened to the collar with something that will remain in place, and will not slip out – at inopportune moments or situations. The best way to ensure this is to check the tag frequently. Once a week may be enough for most animals, though some animals just do not justify such regular checking and once a month may be enough for them.

Find out from your supplier what type of fastening they offer and demand only the very best that you can get. Your pet’s life may depend on that one little piece of wire at some stage.

Disabled pets can also benefit from ID tags

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

The vast majority of discussions around getting pets ID tags focus on pets who do not have any type of disability. This type of discussion effectively erases the many pets who do suffer from some sort of disability: blind, deaf, or the ones with only 3 legs instead of the usual four legs. Some cats and dogs also suffer from diseases from an early age. These diseases can make it difficult to walk properly and the pet might need assistance in some form or another. This is especially true in situations where the pet’s life may be in danger or where they have been lost: animals that are deaf can’t be called easily for example.

Other pets are simply more ‘mature’ and they have the ailments to prove it: they’re hard of hearing or they walk with a limp from their younger, sprightlier days. And still other pets sustained injuries from some type of accident – car accidents are not uncommon.

All these pets can also benefit from ID tags: the tags can state the pet’s disability and this will help tremendously should the pet go lost. The people who find the pet will be able to give him or her the best treatment and care because the pet ID tag tells them what to expect in their interactions with the animal or animals should there be more than one.

Cats and dogs that happen to be disabled are just like the other cats and dogs that are not disabled: they have the same aspirations (climb Mt. Washington, for example) as those other pets. This means that these animals run the same risk of getting lost on their way back home after they conquered yet another mountain. Or some small lizard in the field.

And this is why it makes so much sense to get Fluffy that special pet ID tag with the pink glitters.

Pet insurance and peace of mind

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

Peace of mind is not something that anyone of us can put a price tag on. Most of us want to ensure that the big ticket items will be OK if anything catastrophic happens: the car,the house, and perhaps the contents in those. So we take out insurance against any eventuality. We want to know that, should something happen, we would be covered. The insurance company will pay out an amount and we will be reimbursed up to that amount.

The same thing applies to our pets and the insurance that we decide to get them. There is no way we can determine how much our pet is worth to us, except when the pet is no longer around, and then it is too late.

Pet insurance takes the hassle out of the guesswork. It works by assigning values toillnesses and veterinarian costs. The monthly premium helps to reduce much of the stress that pet owners associate with having a pet. These can be things such as the stress of not knowing how big a bill from a veterinarian will be or it can be the stress of wondering whether the pet’s life can be saved should they get into a fight with a bigger animal. The pet owner knows that, as long as they pay this one monthly payment, their pet would receive the best care when they need it.

Pet insurance, for most people and their pets, is generally worth the money, time and effort spent on educating themselves on how the policy works and what the exclusions – if there are any – are.

And peace of mind has no price tag so the monthly premium may be a small amount to pay for knowing that should something happen to the pet, they will be taken care of in the best possible way by people who have been trained.

How soon should you get pet insurance cover?

October 31, 2010 by Mary Smith

This type of question is one that nearly all pet owners ask themselves at some stage. For most of us, pet insurance cover is one of those purchases that we are not fond of making: it cuts into the budget we spent so much time on, allocating money to nights out and to trips to the Maldives. How much is your pet worth to you?

October 31, 2010 by Mary Smith

Pets and children are perhaps the one of the only two entities that contributes to a big amount of emotional attachment for their parents. We want to ensure that they are clothed, fed, and happy. We do this because we love them and we generally want only the very best for them. But one of the bigger concerns that face us is that of their health. This is true especially for pets that engage in high-risk behaviour, in the same way that some of their owners engage in activities that may be detrimental to their own health.
