Holidays to Gran Canaria: Great Times to Go

February 17, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

The Canary Islands lie off the coast of West Africa meaning that they boast a superb year round climate. Winters can be in the low 20s (°C) with summers being hot (but not uncomfortably so) when they reach the high 20s. This means that holidays to Gran Canaria can be enjoyed at any time of the year, with the island being extremely popular amongst British holidaymakers looking for some winter sun.

The Best Price…

If budget is your biggest concern then the best time of the year to visit Gran Canaria is in December, January or February as prices will be cheaper. The most expensive time of the year for a holiday to Gran Canaria is in July and August when package holidays hit their peak season; this is due to the school holidays in the UK. If you want to combine the best possible temperature with the best available price then you might consider visiting Gran Canaria during April, May, September or October as the weather will be hot and the prices reasonable.

The Best Activities…

One of the reasons many holidaymakers make the trip to Gran Canaria is down to the fantastic options for water sports. You will be able to enjoy a vast array of activities in the water, which maintains a warm temperature for all 12 months of the year. The conditions on the island are perfect for water sports throughout the year, meaning that when all sporting activities in the water come to a standstill throughout the rest of Europe in winter, Gran Canaria is still booming.

The Best Fish…

Deep sea fishing is also big business on the island with numerous tourists enjoying the sport on one of the many boat trips available. As is the case with the other water sports on the island, the climate allows for the possibility of deep sea fishing throughout the year. However, the best time for catching barracudas and tuna is between the months of May and November.

The Best Celebrations…

If you want to combine your holiday with cultural festivities, then visiting Gran Canaria in the New Year will be the best time for you. The Festival de Musica de Canarias is held in January along with the Festival de Opera and carnival in February. If you are headed to Gran Canaria in the summer, don’t worry as you’ll be able to enjoy the Jazz Fest in July and the International Film Festival of Las Palmas every August.

Marsa Alam in Egypt: Rock Inscriptions and Ancient Mines

February 17, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

Egypt’s southernmost Red Sea resort, Marsa Alam is one of the fastest growing holiday resorts in the country. Numerous tourism projects are being established in order to rival the popularity of the already established Egyptian resorts of Sharm el Sheik and Hurghada. However, it is often what has been found in the area for centuries that tourists find the most rewarding. The surrounding areas near to Marsa Alam contain some of the most fascinating aspects of the ancient world.

The surrounding coastal area was once rich in deposits of copper, lead, gold, emeralds and semi-precious stones and is thought to have contained the first emerald mines anywhere in the world. Tourists are able to visit the mines in the Wadi El Gamal National Park south of Marsa Alam. Here visitors will be able to visit the only source of Emeralds during the Roman Empire and a mine which is rumoured to have been linked to Queen Cleopatra. The ancient history will come alive as you explore the source of the stones that may have adorned one of the most famous Queens in history.
The mines are one of the many attractions in the area with perhaps the most magical being the many rock carvings and inscriptions in and around Marsa Alam. In the surrounding mountains there is huge evidence to show the presence of Stone Age man in this area. The smooth rock surface was perfect for prehistoric art with depictions of hunting scenes showing many animals including giraffes, ostriches and hunting dogs. For those with interest in the prehistoric world this can prove an invigorating experience.

If you have more of a keen interest in the Ancient Egyptian times then a visit to Wadi Hammamat not far from Marsa Alam can prove the most enchanting aspects of Egypt holidays. Here you can view ancient graffiti from Pharaonic times as the smooth walls of the Valley of the Baths were the perfect place to document ancient techniques and traditions. When making the trip here you will be able to see drawings of reed boats, amongst others, dating back to 4000 BC.

With so much ancient history to be viewed it is no wonder holidays to Marsa Alam are fast becoming one of the most popular options for Egypt Holidays. If an alternative resort is sought with bountiful treasures to be discovered then Marsa Alam is the perfect resort for you.
