Choosing a Letter Box For Your Home or Business

September 7, 2011 by Nick Bella

It’s hard to imagine what we’d do without letterboxes these days, but they have only been around in the UK since the late 19th century. Without a letter box, mail would be both open to the elements (and British weather and paper don’t mix well!) and to thieves and busybodies. As opposed to the classic red post box, which is where you post mail that you want to be sent, a letter box is for the receipt of mail at your home or business.

There are actually many different kinds of letterboxes available to suit different requirements. These days, you can get one in different sizes, styles and colours and so think not only about the design you like, but what you will be wanting to receive and where. For people who are out at work when the postman comes, the letter box should be able to hold all the mail you expect to receive, so as to save you time and money in keep going to the sorting office to collect parcels, if you are prone to receiving these. Likewise, if you have newspapers delivered, your box should be able to accommodate these. In a similar vein, if you are away on business a lot, leaving your business premises unoccupied, you might want an extra large capacity box to hold all the mail you will receive while you are gone. This can also be an added security measure, as potential intruders won’t see large amounts of mail collecting or spilling out and know that you are away.

If you want something more stylish just to add a touch of glamour to your home (or business), cast aluminium boxes could be the way forward. These are also great at withstanding the elements, as they offer great rust protection.

Whatever Happened to Neighbourhood Watch?

September 7, 2011 by Nick Bella

Neighbourhood Watch stickers used to be able to be seen on almost every lamppost as communities got together to ensure that crime really wasn’t going to pay. However, today, there are more and more break-ins across the country and Neighbourhood Watch seems to be just a thing of the past.

However, it is worth remembering that Neighbourhood Watch was never really anything more than a group of like-minded citizens who wanted to make their area as safe as possible As time has gone on, communities have become more fractious and with the ability to travel more easily and communicate online with anyone, anywhere in the world, there is a good chance that, today, many neighbours in many areas do not even know each other’s names.

However, this is not the only reason that Neighbourhood Watch is no longer as ubiquitous as it once was. The actually ability for such an organisation to stop crimes was limited – ultimately it was all about looking out for one another and ensuring crimes were reported. Many people now realise that most citizens will report such crimes regardless of whether or not they are part of such an organisation.

On top of this home security has changed too. With the ease with which CCTV security cameras can be installed, it is likely that people’s home security is going to be far more likely to thwart a crime than a neighbour’s vigilance.

However, CCTV can only do so much. Should an intruder not be able to be identified, they can easily get away with a great many items, many of which might be irreplaceable, and whilst CCTV security cameras are going to bring a great deal of extra safety to a home, it is still wise to look out for your neighbours. After all, if you can stop a criminal in the act, and call the police in time, there will be one less criminal you need to worry about yourself.

So even if you have CCTV and no Neighbourhood Watch, it doesn’t hurt to keep your eyes peeled anyway.

Improving Your Home

September 7, 2011 by Nick Bella Leave a Comment

Making improvements to your home can take many different forms. The majority of people will instantly consider what areas inside their home can be improved as such changes are far more likely to affect their everyday lives than changes to the exterior of the building. However, whilst internal changes are likely to offer practical benefits on top of the aesthetic ones, external ones can offer a number of benefits of their own.

For example, whilst plastic guttering might indeed help improve the look of a home by removing potentially unattractive metal that can easily rust over time when exposed to the elements, having strong plastic guttering will offer other benefits too, including structural ones. Should your gutters not be up to the job, they will not only leak a bit of water now and again, but by allowing such water to be falling consistently onto the home itself, gardens can get ruined, walls and windows can be damaged and excessive water can even soak into the foundations, potentially making the house structurally unsound.

Likewise, plastic cladding can improve the look of the home whilst ensuring that certain structural damage is not made worse by being exposed to extremes of weather or even simply wear and tear.

By improving the outside of your home aesthetically you are also offering a far better first impression than by simply seeking to refine the interior of your home. For those who want to make their homes look more attractive, such steps are far more likely to see positive results as many people will have formed opinions of your home before they have even stepped inside.

So from plastic cladding right through to items as simple as mailboxes and the lights you use to improve safety, making changes to the outside of your home can bring as many benefits, if not more, than changing your interior.

Establishing the Need for Gas Detection Systems in your Workplace

September 7, 2011 by Nick Bella

Industrial workplaces are likely to come across one or more hazardous or toxic gases. Combustible gases such as methane are highly dangerous because they can cause large and fatal explosions when ignited if there is the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it!) amount of oxygen present. In confined spaces it can also cause suffocation, as methane drives out oxygen. Other problem areas when working in industry are carbon monoxide (which poisons the cardiovascular system), hydrogen sulphide (attacking the central and nervous systems), oxygen deficiency or enrichment, the latter contributing to the methane explosions mentioned above.

Fixed and portable gas detection systems can monitor the amount of harmful gases in the area and alert employees when they need to get out or when systems and processes need to be shut down. A hazard assessment of your site or workplace can determine what gases may be present and so what kind of gas monitoring equipment or detectors are required. Different equipment works with different kinds of gases, and some gas monitoring equipment can detect more than one type of gas. A hazard assessment will also be able to advise on whether fixed or portable detection equipment is best, or a combination of both. As a general rule, fixed equipment is normally used for large, enclosed areas, and portable equipment is worn attached to clothing or a belt or harness for confined spaces, such as in mining. Mining will also require the use of detectors for combustible gas, while a toxic gas monitor would be used in a steel mill.

You must also consider the environment your equipment will be used in. If it is fixed outside, it will have to cope with harsh weather conditions. All equipment needs to be checked regularly and updated when necessary to always ensure optimum safety for your site and your employees.
