Eco Friendly Cars

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

Although Land Rover’s close relationship with our planet is a perfectly natural one, from farmyards to rainforests and glaciers to sand dunes, the term “eco friendly” conjures up quite different images. While maintaining its position as the preeminent off-roader, how has utilitarian stalwart that has long been the choice of explorers and agriculturalists alike, adapted to the new mantle of eco friendly motoring?

At the 2006 Geneva Motorshow, Land Rover first unveiled their vision of eco friendly motoring. LAND_e brings together the most up to date all-terrain technologies, designed to improve both the environmental performance and breadth of capability. As ever, real-world practicality and performance to match the rigours of our planet are paramount.

Starting with the engine, the use of cleaner diesel fuels produced from renewable biomass sources help to strike this balance between performance ecology. Renewable fuels from biomass help to partially offset the CO2 produced by the engine with that which is absorbed when new crops are grown.

The performance characteristics of Land Rover’s Terrain Response system deliver further CO2 reductions while maintaining the kind of traction and off road management that’s not commonly associated with an eco friendly car.

So, not what you’d expect of a hybrid car but Terrain Response improvements include an Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD). When pulling away under light acceleration, the system uses electrical energy stored in a traction battery to drive away without starting the engine. The engine is restarted to support the requirement for additional power.

When the driver takes their foot off the accelerator, or lightly applies the brake, the energy is captured using the electronic rear axle and is stored in the vehicle’s battery. Again, when more is needed, conventional friction brakes are seamlessly integrated. This allows for increased control, safety and fuel economy. As does the system which stops the engine whenever propulsion is not required, at a red light for example but the engine restarts whenever the driver demands acceleration, saving fuel and reducing CO2emissions.

How online poker tournaments work

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

Poker tournaments have been around for a long time, and are a great way for serious poker players to hone their skills. Many casinos around the world host tournaments where top players compete against each other for a substantial amount of money. Gambling havens like Las Vegas host several world class tournaments every year.

Recently, online casinos have joined this popular trend by hosting their own poker tournaments as well. These tournaments are similar to land based casinos, with players pitting themselves against each other for the top prize. The difference, however, are those online poker tournaments typically having fewer restrictions, which often make them more appealing to your average poker player.

How do online poker tournaments work?

Online casinos are similar to traditional brick and mortar casinos and follow the same poker rules. Do your research and find various websites that host popular games like Texas Hold’em Poker.

Online casinos usually run their poker tournaments on a first come first serve basis. You can sign up for each tournament at the respective websites. During the tournament, standard tournament poker rules apply. However, during an online tournament, poker playing etiquette may be more lax as you are not literally next to your opponent. But don’t let this fool you; most players carry the same level of professionalism as they would in a major, traditional tournament. Do yourself a favour and follow traditional poker rules when playing in a tournament.

There are three major advantages to online tournaments. Firstly, online poker tournaments give the player the option to play against almost anyone in the world. This is great for serious poker players wanting to show off their skills.  Secondly, online tournaments are easier to compete in. And thirdly, online tournaments offer players more options. If you have a favourite game that is not hosted by a particular casino, you can easily look around online for a website that does.

What kinds of poker tournaments are available at online casinos?

Online casinos have several tournaments running throughout the year. Some online casinos even offer weekly, monthly and even daily tournaments. Do your research to find one that suits you.

Bounty Tournaments are one of the most popular online tournaments to participate in. In Bounty Tournaments the goal is to eliminate other players and get their bounty. For every player that you eliminate from the tournament, you collect a bounty on that player. The last player to be eliminated collects the final prize.

Another tournament is the Shootout Tournaments. This type of tournament is for truly competitive poker players and works similar to Bounty Tournaments. The goal is to eliminate players, but players are eliminated quicker at single hand tables.

What are the downsides to online poker tournaments?

The biggest downside is probably the risk involved. It can be difficult to determine which online casinos are legitimate or not as they are not as established as their land based counterparts. Some online casinos have a payment policy that is difficult to understand, which could lead to confusion and the player taking home less than expected.

Not every online casino is a scam and there are many legitimate places to play poker online. Research your chosen online casino thoroughly before joining a tournament or even playing casually on the site.

Biosphere Expeditions

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

Biosphere Expeditions is an award-winning, not-for-profit organisation running wildlife expeditions for people wishing to do something active and altruistic in conservation. It was founded in 1999 in the hope that their conservation expeditions would make a small but significant difference to our planet’s biosphere, while at the same time bringing enjoyment, fulfilment and education to the Biosphere Expedition environment volunteer teams.

However, these expeditions are not simply tours for eco-tourists or wildlife holidays for those seeking a bit of adventure. The essential aim of Biosphere Expeditions is to support and develop genuine wildlife projects by placing ordinary, yet undeniably dedicated people in a position where they can work alongside leading research scientists in the field.

As the ongoing commitment and ultimate goal of Biosphere Expeditions is to make an active contribution towards a truly sustainable biosphere, the expedition work is centred on real biological conservation activity. So, they’re no holiday but the hard work does come with an undeniable sense of satisfaction for the wildlife volunteers who commit to worthy cause. These volunteers can rest assured, safe in the knowledge that they not only had an exciting conservation holiday but one with true purpose.

Spending a productive time in the conservation of our global natural heritage is an immensely rewarding experience. Such is Land Rover’s faith and commitment to the ideals embodied by Biosphere Expeditions that the organisation became one of Land Rover’s Global Environmental Sponsorship Partners in 2002.

As part of this dedication, Land Rover provides vehicle support to Biosphere teams all over Our Planet. This allows them to tackle the most difficult terrain that our planet has to offer, in places like Oman, Altai, Slovakia, Namibia and Brazil. In these diverse landscapes and environments, Biosphere Expeditions are engaged in the scientific study and conservation of species as diverse as Arabian and snow leopards, jaguars, pumas, cheetahs, wolves, bears and chamois.

8 Tips to shop safely for furniture online

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

Online shopping for furniture and all other goods has grown into a massive industry and Australia is no exception to this. Australian shoppers are mostly sophisticated internet users but it’s always good to go over the basics one more time. There are still some people who are sceptical about shopping for cheap furniture online. These people may even balk at buying webtickets online because they’re afraid of falling prey to a scam of some sort.

But there are ways to mitigate the possible negative consequences of shopping online. It’s also possible to have an enjoyable time shopping for things that we need.

Stop at any time that you’re in doubt

Are you unsure about the website, your privacy, or the cheap furniture product you’re about to order? Then stop the transaction and return when you’ve gathered more information. It’s your money so feel free to return when you’re more informed or when you feel more assured about your privacy.

The site should protect your privacy

Scour the website’s Privacy Policy before, during, and after any interaction with them. Businesses that belong to TRUSTe immediately become more trusted than those that do not belong to this internet privacy service provider: TRUSTe monitors websites’ privacy practices.

You should feel safe

It’s no longer enough to just have a padlock icon on the site; shopping sites should also use https to show that their site is secure. Sites that do not use https could pose a potential threat to online shoppers. Sites and business owners should protect your credit card details against hackers. Contact the Australian Privacy Commissioner for information on privacy, IT and internet security issues.

Look for the small print

Read the site’s Terms & Conditions before you buy from them. Or try to find the ‘Disclaimer’, or ‘Legal Notices’ for more information. You want to know whether the shop offers a guarantee or a warrantee. Do they offer product support and are their products available to Australian shoppers who are looking to buy cheap furniture? And does the company include Goods and Services Tax in their prices?

Does something smell fishy?

If you can answer the following questions in the negative, you’re unlikely to be the victim of a scam:

  • Does the site make extraordinary claims?
  • Are the product prices super low?
  • Do you think the company is an amateur?
  • Does their phone just ring and ring and no-one answers?
