Types of jobs of occupational health

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

There are a number of occupational health jobs available up and down the country, however many people struggle to find the perfect job for them.

As more people compete for occupational health jobs, it is even more important to consider all possible sectors when looking for work.

Website, Prospects recently interviewed a lady called Lydia who is currently in one of the much sought after jobs in occupational health- a health and safety manager.

In her interview, she explains that she initially obtained a degree in biological sciences from Nottingham Trent University before studying with the British Safety Council for a Level 6 diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.

Although she is currently working in the occupational hygiene field for companies that deal in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors, Lydia admits that she fell into the role by chance after her employer suggested she study a degree in occupational health.

Speaking to Prospects she explained that she gained a lot of experience supporting a radiation protection supervisor before moving into a management role. With such a great potential for her to earn more money she then decided to go back to study for a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

She said: “The vocational nature of the role suits my personality and once I realised that there was also a good earning potential, I decided to study for a relevant professional qualification and develop my career in the field.”

As part of her role, Lydia is responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture within the workplace. She also carries out risk assessments and makes recommendations to company’s senior managers.

She added: “My favourite parts of the job are the interaction with employees at all levels in the company, and promoting sensible and positive attitudes to safety. Less favourable is the fact that the job does involve a lot of influencing and persuading… this is OK, but can be wearing at times!”

Ten Reasons to Become a Massage Therapist

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

1. Massage therapists are licensed professionals.

Almost all states in the U.S. require massage therapists to be licensed. To become a massage therapist, you must complete a certification or degree program at a massage therapy school and anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand hours of practice. While this may sound like a lot of work, it’s actually great recognition for people in the field. Massage therapy has become a respected profession, and not just anyone can set up shop anymore.

2. Massage therapists graduate with all the skills they need to work right away.

Massage therapy school is hands-on. Students are trained in musculature, anatomy, and several massage therapy techniques. By the time they graduate, they’ve had enough practical experience to start working at spas, hospitals, clinics, or even out of their own homes.

3. Massage therapists can become business owners.

According to the Bureau f Labor Statistics, 57% of massage therapists are self-employed. Many of these people work out of their homes or travel to clients. Still others with thriving practices open their own offices and also employ others to offer clients a whole range of services and techniques.

4. Massage therapists can set their own hours.

Being able to make your own schedule is one of the biggest advantages of being self-employed. If you have children, hate mornings, or are even pursuing a second career, massage therapists who work for themselves can schedule appointments to fit their own lives.

5. Massage therapists can travel to exotic locations for work.

Because spas, hotels, and cruise ships employ so many massage therapists, adventure seekers may be able to find employment anywhere from mountain ski resorts to tropical island destinations.

6. Massage therapists help people.

Massage therapists provide an invaluable service to people who are in pain, recovering from injuries, or experiencing severe stress. The work they do speeds up the healing process, improves circulation, and restores emotional balance to their clients’ lives.

7. Clients look forward to seeing their massage therapists.

Whether the reason is medicinal, therapeutic, or just a special occasion, people genuinely look forward to getting massages. While most folks dread going to the doctor or the dentist, seeing a massage therapist is a positive experience associated with feeling good.

8. Massage therapists work in relaxing environments.

Because a massage therapists create a mood with scented candles, soft towels, and music, they get to spend their working hours in a peaceful place of their own design.

9. Massage therapists stay physically active.

Massage therapists work on their feet and engage their whole bodies when giving massages. The nature of the work is physically demanding, and as a result, massage therapists are often in great shape.

10. Job outlook is great for licensed massage therapists.

Because the medical community is beginning to recognize the value of massage therapy, job growth over the next decade is predicted to be 19%, which is above average. New massage therapy jobs are even being created in places like office buildings and nursing homes.

What do vegetarians eat to ensure they don’t miss out on nutrition?

February 15, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

A vegetarian can be defined as a person who does not eat or believe in eating meat, fish, poultry or animal products such as fat. They may eat dairy products like milk and cheese as the animal was not killed to obtain it: it is vegans whom refuse to eat or use any animal product – even leather.

Nutrients that may be lacking in a vegetarian diet

Protein

Poultry such as chicken and turkey is an excellent source of protein, which is needed by the body for a range of functions including energy metabolism and the growth and developments of cells1. The good news for vegetarians is that there is a wide range of plant based foods that also contain protein.

Nuts, seeds, beans and pulses make up the bulk of vegetarian friendly protein-rich foods. Lentils, black beans and soybeans are particularly rich in protein2.

Vitamin B12

The body only needs a small amount of this vitamin each day; however it is nonetheless an important nutrient. Vitamin B12 plays a role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and in the formation of blood3.

For vegetarians, dairy foods such as eggs and cheese are the best source. As no plant source of vitamin B12 is known, many vegans opt to take supplements to ensure they get all their body needs.

Iron

Red meat is one of the richest sources of iron, and this mineral is easily extracted from red meat by the body. Despite this, there are a number of other non-meat food sources that are rich in iron. We’re all familiar with Pop-Eye getting his strength from cans of spinach, and indeed spinach is a good source of the stuff. Other fruit and vegetables which contain iron include figs, spring greens and baked beans4.

If you are considering changing your diet to exclude meat, poultry, fish or other animal products it is wise to consult a nutritional professional, who will be able to advise you on how this may affect your health.

Extenze – The Wonder Drug

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Senior citizens are having children. They are getting married. One wonders, how they are keeping the spark in their relationship alive after all the years. The answer to that is good health. But, this is not possible for couples today. Today couples are commonly suffering from stress related ailments, which rob them of the enthusiasm to lead a healthy and happy life with their families. Majority of males today, suffer from infertility, low virility, erectile dysfunction, and other penile disorders, premature ejaculation, etc. The result of this is that today, males are resorting to cures for erectile dysfunction like Extenze, Phentermine, Cialis, Generic Viagra, etc.

Extenze has been brought out by the male penis enhancement industry. It is not Viagra, nor is it a prescription drug for infertility. It is a purely herbal medicine, which increases the testosterone levels in males, thus boosting their libido. The product is a mixture of 19 neutraceuticals, which go into enhancing the length and girth of the male penis. This male enhancement product is composed of safe herbal ingredients, which combine with the naturally occurring human growth hormone in the body to strengthen and boost the various muscle groups in the penile area and re-enforce the male organ to perform with a stronger and fortified vigor.

People looking at purchasing a male enhancement product, may consider the reviews for this product posted over various websites and various magazines. The product is considered the answer to the maladies of the stressed out male of today. It purports to increase the size of the penis and lengthen it, increase sensitivity, increase sex drive, performance, as well as increasing the frequency of an erection and the number of erections. The product is marketed as a herbal supplement and not as a dietary supplement. But whether this product is really effective is the moot question doing the rounds in the market inundated with numerous such drugs for male enhancement.

The problem with Extenze, however, is that, it allegedly causes high blood pressure, heart attacks, and even death, if taken without consulting a doctor. It can cause migraines, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, and mood swings that can affect one’s life, and, the relationships he has with his family and friends. Many mixed reviews are circulating on the net. Some people have endorsed the product, whereas others have condemned it. Overall, it remains on the individual to decide its use. There are mixed reactions to the introduction of this drug in the market.

Some people who have used it have reported positive results, but, there are an equal number, expressing doubts about the veracity of the claims, made by the people involved with this product. It is left to the user to decide, whether to use this product. One thing to note in this confusion is that it is to be noted as to which customers are citing positive results for this drug, and which of them are giving negative reviews. It is to be verified whether the pharmaceutical companies marketing these drugs are not behind people citing positive results for this product.

Male Enhancement Pills to the Fore

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

One capsule a day is the recommended dose for this male enhancement supplement, which goes by the name of Generic Cialis and which is available in stores as well as online. The suppliers of this product offer a seven-day free trial with a money back guarantee. This male enhancement product is composed of safe herbal ingredients, which combine with the naturally occurring human growth hormone in the body to strengthen and boost the various muscle groups in the penile area and re-enforce the male organ to perform with a stronger and fortified vigor. However, the most effective drug in this category is yet to be found out.

Cialis has been screened by about 15,000 men participating in clinical trials, along with 8 million others who are doing the same worldwide. The results that have been brought out by this are not very positive. Cialis is said to cause headache, indigestion, high blood pressure, back aches, flushy or runny nose, etc. These side effects divulge the ability of PDE5 inhibitors in the drug to widen the blood vessels. But this goes away after some hours. Back pain and muscle aches are observed about 12-24 hours after having taken the drug, but they also remain only for 48 hours.

A further development of this was that in the year 2005, it was found by the FDA that this drug caused vision impairment. This they said was due to the PDE5 inhibitors present in the drug. This vision impairment was related to NAION in certain patients taking these drugs in post-marketing (outside of clinical trials) cases. But it was further found that most of these patients had underlying anatomical or underlying risk factors for the development of NAION unrelated to PDE5 use, including low cup to disc ratio, age over 50, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidermia, etc.

Given the small number of cases of NAION (1 in 1 million) the large number of users of PDE5 inhibitors and that this effect is caused in a similar population to those who do not take this medication, the drug was absolved of its negative effects. In the year 2007, further the FDA, further asked manufacturers to exhibit the harmful effects of PDE5 inhibitors as hearing loss caused as a result of use of PDE5 inhibitors. All in all, it has been concluded that this drug is good in small doses, but if taken in large doses could result in side effects.

People looking at purchasing this wonder drug may first be aware of the pros and cons of it and then decide for themselves about the relative use of this drug for their condition. Although this drug has its positive effects in reducing the malady of erectile dysfunction and infertility, it is to be noted that overdose of this drug is likely to cause negative effects like a flushy nose, diabetes, back-aches, vision impairment, etc. This however, has been found to be the case in longterm users and not short-term users.
