Manchester’s office space crisis

Despite retaining the position of UK business’s “second city”, it was announced this month, Northern industrial city Manchester has dropped in the European rankings from 12th to 16th. The yearly European Cities Monitor, performed by Cushman and Wakefield, looks at business research tallies from 500 businesses over nine countries. Dropping below Geneva, Zurich, and Stockholm will be a blow to the city’s business community. The reason for the drop? A lack of affordable office space.

While the city’s score for number of languages spoken, quality of life and public transport links improved, However, the city gained in terms of languages spoken, internal transport and quality of life, with the report praising its “skilled, multi lingual workforce.” The report urged readers to remember that the majority of other cities featured were capital cities, and suggested that the rank of 12th was an impressive one for the city, whose quality of life is said to be one of the highest in Britain despite its Northern aspect and famously gloomy weather. However, the lack of quality office space available let the city down, with the report organiser saying that “due to an almost record year for office uptake last year, Manchester has become a victim of its own success in this category.”
