Theatre production receives praise

August 17, 2011 by Nick Bella

These days, there are many theatre sets and stage props for companies to make use of when they put on shows. In a somewhat unorthodox use of such accessories, the Principal Theatre Company is staging open air performances of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

According to review in Stage magazine by Abigail Webber, the production should not be missed. The performances are being staged in the grounds of Capel Manor and they incorporate “lively acting and songs”.

Ms Webber remarked: “The cast’s enthusiasm and enjoyment of this Shakespearean romcom are infectious, and the story is told with a warmth and affection that embraces and includes the audience.

“The subtle repartee between Beatrice and Benedick is nicely balanced with the more obvious, but equally amusing, humour of Dogberry and his team of incompetents, and a wealth of visual gags leads to some inspired comic moments.”

Among the cast members are John Canmore, David McKechnie, Annabelle Brown and Daniel Jennings.

Meanwhile, Ms Webber added that theatre lovers should pray the rain holds off so that performances of this show can go ahead. According to the reviewer, the production “sparkles and fizzes with energy and joy”.

She also noted that the use of theatre sets and stage props is minimal.

The Principal Theatre Company was founded in 1999 and it is based in North London. Each year, it puts on an open-air, professional Shakespeare production intended to be accessible to all. Among its patrons are Christopher Biggins, Ruth Madoc and Lynda Bellingham.

Meanwhile, its artistic directors are Paul Gladwin, who set up the organisation, and Elizabeth Rowden, who performed in its 2007 show Twelfth Night. After appearing in the play, she realised she wanted to be part of the company’s future.

These days, relatively few theatrical performances take place outdoors, but this was much more common in the past.

The CD95 antibody in the news

August 17, 2011 by Nick Bella

CD95, also known as FAS or APO1, is a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. Early experiments with monoclonal antibodies identified it as a death receptor expressed on the membrane of a number of cell types, including tumor cells and lymphocytes. In a recent FAS antibody study, a single nucleotide variant of FAS was shown to have a possible protective role against malaria in children. We at Novus Biologicals have an extensive range of CD95/Fas antibodies on our antibody database.

CD95 initiates apoptosis following Fas-ligand (FasL/CD95L) binding, forming the death-inducing signaling complex (DISC ) via recruitment of caspase 8 and FADD. Cross-linking of CD95 using monoclonal antibodies has been shown to cause apoptosis of cells expressing CD95, in the same way that ligand-receptor binding does.

While the Fas ligand is primarily expressed on activated T cells and natural killer cells, the receptor protein is highly expressed in a number of other areas, including white blood cell types, and epithelial cells. In mice, it has been identified in heart, thymus, lung, liver, kidney and ovarian tissue. Alternatively spliced cDNAs, encoding a number of Fas isoforms, have been identified, and the Fas antibody is widely used in cancer research.

In normal cells, cell-specific apoptosis induced by the CD95/CD95 Ligand-binding mechanism plays a critical role in modulating the immune response. Defects in this pathway can be a cause of autoimmune disorders.

However, it appears that genetically altered variants may also have a beneficial role. In a joint study by Kumasi University, Ghana and the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, a variant at the human FAS locus was shown to prevent a potentially fatal immune response to malaria in children. Malaria is a major killer of children under the age of five in Africa, as unlike adults they do not have the immunity which prevents severe reactions to the parasite. CD95 antibodies revealed a genetic disposition in some children to overexpress CD95 on certain white blood cells, increasing apoptosis of these cells and muting the immune response.

Why Smaller Workforces Thrive

August 17, 2011 by Nick Bella

It may seem as though the bigger your workforce is, the better you are doing. However, in reality, it is often the smaller workforces which thrive more. Those with fewer members of staff are likely to weather economic storms far better, have fewer staff issues and simply have higher profit margins. Therefore, if you are able to keep your workforce small, the chances are it will bring with it many benefits.

After all, with fewer members of staff in any team, the chances for personalities or work styles to clash is likely to be dramatically reduced. On top of this, the left hand is far more likely to know exactly what the right hand is doing, whilst working together will be much easier when there are only a few people needing to be involved.

On top of this, overheads will be lower. The more staff you have on your team, the larger your premises will need to be and the larger your HR department will in turn have to be, with wages and staff issues taking up a great deal of time.

However, to thrive, companies need to grow. However, by using warehousing throughout the UK and by outsourcing specific work to external companies you can ensure that your workforce stays small and can adapt easily, but also that you can simultaneously take on as much work as you need to to ensure that you are a force to be reckoned with within your industry.

The same companies who offer warehousing in West Sussex are likely to offer warehousing facilities all over the country, therefore even if you expand to have offices throughout the UK, you are likely to be able to use the same companies you have grown to trust no matter how big you become.

Whilst being able to tell customers you have thousands of employees may seem like a good selling point, by using warehousing in West Sussex and beyond and in turn keeping your company small, you will find it far easier to increase profit and thrive in the long term.

Online psychometric tests can find the most ‘creative’ candidates

August 17, 2011 by Nick Bella

For those applying for jobs in the creative industries, be warned- employers are now using online psychometric tests to gauge that you are as ‘creative’ as your CV has implied.

This new form of psychometric test has been developed by an Australian psychologist called Dr Amantha Imber who has produced the test alongside global organisation, Kimberly Clark.

Designed to test a candidate’s creative skills, the psychometric test will be able to measure how innovative and inventive the candidate is when faced with certain situations or questions.

Called the Inventium Creative Aptitude Test (ICAT), Amantha decided to get involved with the project to develop such a test as she agreed it was too easy for some candidates to lie about how creative they were on their application forms.

The head of the innovation team at Kimberly Clark approached Amantha after they were struggling to find truly creative and inventive people to work on developing new products and brands.

Although the test took almost three years to develop, it is now able to help companies identify 14 key traits that are fundamental to a creative mind and personality.

With the questions and answers based on the latest neuro-scientific and psychological research, candidates taking the test will find themselves having to respond to work place problems, while having areas such as they assertiveness and self-confidence also put to the test.

The ICAT is also able to predict other behavioural and character traits such as a candidate’s ability to adapt to new environments, ability to work within a team with other people and ability to think beyond the company ‘norms.’

Amantha now believes the test will be a welcome tool in the world of recruitment as more and more employers are looking for candidates that are inventive and creative in their thinking.
