Employers Reject 90 Percent of Resumes–Will Your Resume Survive the Cut?

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

In today’s highly competitive job market, only those with exceptional resumes will be called to interview. It isn’t unusual for even the most qualified candidate to be rejected due to a poorly designed resume. Unemployment is expensive. Writing your own resume using a template designed years ago can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in lost income each week.

Many job seekers mistakenly believe that because their old resume worked years ago, it will work again in today’s job market. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Due to the shear volume of resumes that employers receive, many have opted to automate their hiring system. Rather than read each resume from start to finish, employers more often require that job seekers upload their resumes into a database with resumes from hundreds/thousands of other candidates. At that point, hiring managers filter for select industry-related keywords very similar to a Google search. The more hits they find, the more likely your resume is to be printed and reach the hands of the hiring manager.

Jumpstart your job search and improve your response rate by developing an effective marketing strategy that demonstrates to the employer why you are the best candidate for the position. Quantify your accomplishments whenever possible using numbers, dollar amounts, and percentages as this information will demonstrate both the level of responsibility that you’ve held, as well as your success in the position. Search current job postings for the most sought after industry-related keywords and use them within sentences to establish context optimizing your resume for the employer’s ATS (Applicant Tracking Software).

I often hear job seekers state that “a resume won’t get you a job” and this is true. Building a strong network and interviewing skills are also key to an effective job search. However, a poor or mediocre resume can prevent you from getting a job. Many polls show that only one or two typos are enough to disqualify a candidate from consideration. In fact, I’ve even worked with a job seeker who had been offered a job with the resume supposedly required as a formality. The employer later rescinded the job offer after reading the job seeker’s self-written resume which lacked organization and demonstrated poor written communication skills.

An example of a resume incorporating many of these marketing principals is available for review. Click here.

If you aren’t sure what is required on your resume in order to capture the hiring manager’s attention–this isn’t a good time to experiment. Professional resume writers are not all alike. In fact, many have no specific training and use the same templates available to anyone with Internet access. Make sure that your resume writer is certified and then verify his/her certifications. Many writers claim to be certified, yet are not. Training and talent varies greatly and quality is often sacrificed when working with local writers or resume mills so ask to see samples of their work. The investment in the highest quality resume is often little more than that for a mediocre resume.

In Today’s Competitive Job Market – Your Resume Has To Be the Best.

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

As a Certified Professional Resume Writer, I am often approached by highly qualified job seekers frustrated by weeks and often months of costly unemployment. Job seekers who have sent hundreds of resumes yet never hear back from the employer.

I’ve found that the majority of my clients attempt to write their own resume and only seek the help of a professional after weeks of failure. There are many reasons they fail, but most tend to be associated with ineffective resume templates designed in the 1990s which are not compatible with today’s keyword searches done by recruiters and hiring managers. I am dismayed to think of the number of opportunities that highly qualified candidates have lost to those less qualified but have a better understanding of today’s job search process.

The Top 5 Reasons Resumes Fail

Lack of Industry Specific Keywords – Due to the sheer volume of resumes that employers receive, only a handful are ever printed and will reach the hands of the hiring manager. Employers today often use software programs to search for keywords specific to the position. The more hits that they find, the more likely it is that your resume will be read. This is the process that most often eliminates even the most qualified candidates from consideration.
Resume Format – There are a variety of formats available to better market your skills and experience including: chronological, functional, hybrid, Curriculum Vitae (CV), Federal Resume format, etc. Choosing the wrong format for your situation can quickly eliminate you from consideration. A well-written resume will match your skills and experience to the hiring managers’ needs.
Objective or Qualifications Summary? – I personally believe that an old-fashioned objective is a waste of the most valuable real estate on the resume. It would be nice if employers really cared what you wanted in a job, but in actuality they are only concerned with what you can do for them. Why not use this area to market the skills and experience to position you as the best candidate for the position?
Task-Focused vs. Accomplishment Based Resume – Unfortunately, the majority of resumes that I review are more of a chronological history than a true marketing document. Imagine a hiring manager with one position to fill and 100 equally qualified candidates applying for the position and each candidate has a similar educational and professional background. It’s easy to see that the candidate who contributed the most in previous positions is likely to get the job.
A One-Size-Fits-All Resume – In today’s highly competitive job market a one-size-fits-all resume really fits none. An employer searching for an accountant is going to be searching for different keywords than an employer searching for a sales representative. If you don’t know what type of position that you’re looking for, how will the employer know?

In today’s highly competitive job market it is imperative that you quickly and concisely provide the hiring manager with the information that they seek. A well formatted resume will allow the employer to quickly glance at the resume and find the skills and experience that they are looking for in the first 1/3 of the first page. Only after capturing their attention will they bother to read your resume from top to bottom.
When seeking the help of a professional it is important to seek a “certified resume writer”. With today’s economic conditions many claim to be professional resume writers, however, they often do not have the training necessary to help you get through the screening process.

Choose carefully; ask for and compare samples of their work. Your writer should do much more than simply type a resume. They will analyze your career and help you determine your career direction, develop a format that’s most suitable to your specific situation, and then craft a strong and compelling marketing document that targets your career objective and positions you as the best candidate for the position. A can help you get the job that you want and the pay you deserve.

Scuba Diving Holidays- How to Plan?

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Very soon the cold winter will be over and spring will be knocking on your door. Spring is the time for travelling, for thinking about where to go on your vacations. Have you for example decided where you would like to go yet? What have you considered this year, decisions have to be made? For instance, diving holidays can be an exciting adventure.

So if this is something you would like to try then first we will need for you to get the destination sorted one that it is done it will be it high time to start preparations for diving holidays of a lifetime. In reality the preparation can be as exciting as the holiday itself, there is for example a big list of necessary things you have to consider, do and take with you. Let`s examine these simple steps, so that you can prepare and dream of the adventure to come. First of all, make all the needed reservations, book the hotel, flight tickets and any transfer or car hire, and also make the necessary scuba diving reservations.

If you are thinking about going to some of the most popular diving resorts like Egypt, Hawaii, UAE or somewhere else, remember to pack your diving certificate. If you do not have any, you can often take a diving course within the resort. Mind that this course takes time and some days, so remembering your certificate will make for a more enjoyable holiday.

Diving is great fun but needs plenty of time to get the best from your holiday, so its always better to book as long a trip as you dare, thus you can then rest, bathe, get a good tan as well as have super fun with planned scuba diving. There are a great number of popular diving resorts. Select one and start planning your voyage. In addition to training certificate, you had better remember the other crucial things you may need. Think about these in advance and do not forget at home to pack all documentation, your passport, flight tickets, medical insurance, plus an emergency piece of “plastic” just in case your wallet or purse gets lost. This will help you greatly and you can escape any misunderstandings and any unpleasant situations during your trip, with all the necessary planning in place.

As we have already suggested If you do not have a diving certificate, you are free to address a diving service in the hotel or resort. Just ask the administration and they can provide you with the all information and instructors.

When you are a more serious adventurer you will have all your own equipment and the check list expands to cover things like a suitable scuba costume or wetsuit, breathing apparatus, flippers, a knife and camera if you want to take photos under water. However, do not worry; all of these are available for rent at the diving centre. If you have in the past been diving but feel that you have forgotten some skills, then you can simply take a refresher course. If you want to raise your level of diving abilities, it is also possible to do whilst you are at many of the resorts, all levels at your disposal. Any diving course you take will allow you to venture further and enjoy scuba diving and have fun exploring the beautiful marine world.

Scuba Diving for Beginners, when you have been trained enough in a pool and ready to get into open waters, you will be first guided by the diving with instructor. But, please, follow do remember to follow all the rules prescribed whether you are beginner or an advanced diver. We wish you a nice scuba vacation and exciting adventure. Have a good scuba diving holidays

Internet Dental Web Marketing Part 3 of 4: Selling on the Web

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Google marketing dental treatments:
To sell on the web, a successful aesthetic dental website needs to be found. Google.co.uk is the most popular search engine in the UK and being at the top of Google for any key phrase is possible. Google offers sponsored advertising space along the right hand side of its natural, free listing; sometimes the sponsored adverts also run along the top. Advertisers Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and are provided advanced statistics to monitor campaigns 24/7.

Signing up to Google AdWords allows the dentist to create adverts with specific wording, target specific key phrases, set a daily budget and a maximum Cost-Per-Click (max CPC) budget. Pay-per-click advertising on Google is like an auction. If a competitor sets a higher max CPC then their advert will, in most cases, rank higher. It is important to be on the first page of results in order to improve the Impressions, which is the number of times the advert is shown.

It is better to be in the top half of the first page to improve the Click-Through-Rate (CTR), which is the ratio between the number of Clicks on the advert and the number of Impressions. CTR can also be improved by creating well-worded adverts which have a headline that shouts back the search terms used i.e. an advert targeting the search phrase “cosmetic dentist in wales” and using an advert headline “Cosmetic Dentist in Wales” will have a better chance of being noticed and clicked on than if the headline was “Dental Makeover in Wales”. Well-worded adverts with higher CTR are considered good quality adverts and could rank higher without increasing the max CPC.

Creating well-linked adverts is important so that visitor expectations are met quickly. The visitor will click on the most appealing advert expecting to see a website of relevance. By linking the advert to a specific and relevant web page and not necessarily the home or intro page, the advertiser gets straight to the point and ensures that the visitor does not lose interest. For example, if a visitor specifically searches on Google for “tooth whitening in wales” then the advert should link directly to the tooth whitening web page so that the visitor does not have to search for the page of most interest.

Selling dental treatments:
In this information age, potential and existing patients are making informed decisions on whether or not to have cosmetic dental treatment without even consulting the dentist. People fear what they do not understand. Website visitors need to understand how a treatment is done so that they can feel comfortable and confident in their decision to take up treatment. Visitors will leave the website if they feel they do not have enough information to make a decision; they will further their research by seeking out other dental websites. Websites need to retain visitors by educating them about the treatments.

Hearing about dental treatments:
Nothing grabs attention more than sound. Choosing the right melody to play when the visitor arrives on the home page allows the website to stand out and become memorable. Matching the tune with existing on-hold telephone music creates consistency of branding. The on-hold telephone narration may also be suitable, after cropping the sound files, for the website to complement wording and images. Not all visitors will want to read, especially whilst surfing the web in the evening after a long day at work. Listening to a professional, soothing voice can awaken interest and take the strain off the eyes so that learning about the aesthetic dental treatments becomes easy. Cosmetic dental websites should see how best to incorporate sound so that it attracts interest and does not drive visitors away.

Developing relationships:
Out of sight, out of mind. A successful Internet marketing campaign involves e-mailing patients on a regular basis. Keeping in touch with patients, keeps them up-to-date in an affordable and efficient manner that reminds them of the cosmetic dentistry and facial rejuvenation services on offer. Maintaining a relationship with patients improves communication and loyalty. Directing patients to the website for further information allows the emails to be short and catchy, which increases readership.

Capturing website visitors’ email addresses and sending out e-mails is an effective method of building up relationships as well as increasing trust and credibility with potential patients over time. Web visitors tend to browse, compare and wait before making a decision. Emailing fortnightly tips and short e-newsletters is a way to stand out and keep in touch.

Sending out emails is an effective ‘word-of-mouth’ marketing tool, which allows subscribers to easily forward the e-mail onto friends and family. This is the viral effect of email marketing and the benefits are immediate.
