Managing Food Waste Through Plastics

February 16, 2011 by James Lewis

people still threw their household trash out on the street, as their parents had done and their grandparents too, and all their ancestors back to the dawn of civilization. Cities were overflowing with trash.

Deep gutters lined streets to collect and, hopefully, wash away the refuse during rainstorms. Food waste has always been a problem. Even in these modern times when refrigeration is commonplace, spoiled food items remain the largest portion of discarded household waste. In olden days, pigs roamed the streets of towns and cities, consuming the leftover food that was unfit for human consumption. Needless to say, rats and other pests were rife and rampant. The smells would choke a modern day pedestrian and the potential for disease lurked on every corner and in the blocks between.

Thankfully, public sanitation improved. People began to put their waste into metal barrels to be collected by trash men. Municipal systems deployed a corps of dedicated sanitarians set up to patrol a community on a set schedule to cart away unwanted refuse. Without mouldering food outside every doorstep, the air quality of cities improved, incidents of communicable disease fell off, and communities began to resemble the clutter-free, hygienic streetscapes to which we are now accustomed.

Metal barrels and bins remained the trash receptacle of choice for most of the twentieth century. After World War Two, with increased research and development in the plastics industry, new materials were deployed for food waste management, storage, and delivery for curbside collection. Space Age ingenuity created new designs with walls that resisted puncture and were incapable of rusting. Flexible lids fit tightly. The functional improvements over the old bins were obvious and metal fell out of fashion as plastic became more durable and inexpensive.

Form usually follows function and one detriment of the old bins was that they needed to be hoisted from a person’s elbows no matter how full. An over-full trash can would be dragged over rough surfaces because it was too heavy to lift. This caused wear and tear to the trash barrel’s bottom and limited its lifespan. When plastic was introduced, these bins suffered the same fate until some clever industrial designer happened upon the idea of installing permanent wheels to the base.

Much like the trend in modern luggage, trash is now transported from back garden to street in wheelie bins that save a homeowner’s muscles and enhance the longevity of the storage equipment. Modern wheelie bins have become the trash bin of choice, dominating the landscape in front of buildings on collection day.

Plastic wheelie bins are constructed in a variety of sizes, ranging from 140 litres to 1100 litres. They resist impact and are sturdy enough to withstand any amount of abuse. They contain copious amounts of food waste, containing smells, and deterring rodents and pests from taking advantage of their outdoor location. Mgbplastics.com

Power tools and the wireless revolution

February 16, 2011 by James Lewis 1 Comment

We all love wireless technology. Mobile phones, the wireless mouse on your computer, easy internet anywhere in the house, a doorbell that doesn’t require endless fiddly installation. Wires and cords are a pain and doing away with them has been one of the great achievements of electronics in the last few decades.

It’s easy to forget, in this age of information superhighways and pocket-sized computers that can do almost anything, that the wireless revolution began with bigger wires- the cords on power tools. The very first cordless tools appeared as early as 1961, decades before anyone even dreamed of wireless internet and the mountain of wireless gadgets that now grace every home.

Cords get in the way. That’s pretty obvious to anyone who has tried to plug in a DVD player or a home printer. It’s even more obvious to those of us who use serious tools in demanding situations every working day. Not only are long cords a trip hazard, they are also easily damaged, time consuming to put away neatly, and generally clutter up a space that would be better off remaining clear. Cordless tools made the workshop much tidier and far more convenient. They meant it was easier to work on ladders and in confined spaces and avoid electrical, heat, and water hazards.

Now, there is a world of difference between a cordless device- one that supplies its own power- and a wireless device that receives information without any direct physical connection. Nobody could realistically claim otherwise. However, it was innovations like cordless power tools that showed the world just how much easier it was to use a piece of equipment that wasn’t attached to a fixed point with cords or wires. Next time you log on using a wifi hotspot, remember to thank your faithful cordless drill!

Business coaching brought to uni students

February 16, 2011 by James Lewis

Business coaching and management training have long been popular in the corporate sphere. After all, many organisations find such services to be a great help. And with economic conditions tough at present, the need to be as competitive and effective as possible arguably makes such provisions more important than ever.

Indeed, so valued are business coaching and management training that one organisation has decided to take services similar to these and introduce them to the world of higher education.

Recently, iGoalz Coaching announced it is offering business and life coaching to undergraduates in the US. It is targeting ambitious, high-achieving students at colleges and universities across the North American country.

According to the firm, there had been a gap in the market until this point. While professionals could access such services in a bid to enhance their careers, students could not do the same to provide themselves with a boost in terms of their prospects upon leaving their educational institutions.

Dr R C Glen, who is behind the new offering, said: “Students with … great potential often lack the practical skills and experience needed to assertively negotiate the myriad choices they face in their challenging new environment.”

She went on to note that university education does not come cheap these days and tens of thousands of dollars are spent on it. For this reason, it is vital that people make the most of their opportunities, the expert claimed.

Dr Glen added: “Managing that investment in today’s economy, where there is more competition for fewer jobs and graduate school slots, is more important than ever.”

She believes that early access to executive-style coaching ensures that those who make the most of it will hit the ground running in their professional lives.

Meanwhile, in the UK, universities are planning to gear many of their courses more towards corporate priorities in a bid to make them competitive in the new higher fees system that is due to come into place in coming years.

How to Make An Ice Rink In Your Back Garden

February 16, 2011 by James Lewis

Ever wanted to go ice skating but don’t have an ice rink near where you live, or can’t afford to take all the kids to one because it’s too expensive? Why not make an ice rink of your own in your back garden! Here’s how.

First, you’ll need to watch the weather forecast to find out if it’s going to be a cold enough night to freeze the ice. Basically, it needs to be zero degrees or just below freezing, preferably all night long and into the next day.

Next, choose an area of the back garden or your yard where there is a dip in the ground that could create a sort of pool. It doesn’t have to be that deep, just lower than the rest of the ground. If there isn’t a spot like this, you could try laying down a large tarp on the ground.

Next, use your garden hose to fill the low spot or fill the tarp with water. Now all you need to do is leave it over night. If the temperature goes below freezing, and the water isn’t too deep, your ice rink should be frozen solid by morning.

Of course you’ll need ice skates to use your rink. If you need adult and kids skates, try some sports wear and sporting good shops, or try a Web shop such as Flywalk at skates.co.uk. Kids skates and adult skates are available at reasonable prices.

Now just bundle up, grab your ice skates, and head out to the ice rink to have some fun! If your kids have never been ice skating before, you might want to put some shin and knee pads on them to protect their legs in case they fall down a lot.Try holding hands with younger kids until they get the hang of it.
