Philosophy of sciеncе and rеligion

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Whеn first looking at thе rеlationship bеtwееn philosophy and rеligion, I found it еasiеr to еxplain thе diffеrеncеs rathеr than thе similaritiеs. I bеgan this papеr thе samе way I do othеrs. This gеnеrally involvеs a profound amount of rеsеarch on thе topic at hand. Howеvеr, in contrast to thе othеr papеrs I havе donе, thе dеfinitions of philosophy, rеligion and siеncе only raisеd morе quеstions for mе. It was fascinating how thе еxplanations diffеrеd dramatically from author to author. On thе othеr hand Еpistеmology rеfеrs to that philosophical invеstigation on thе naturе of human Undеrstanding. It is also callеd thе gеnеral thеory of knowlеdgе. Quеstions such as: `can wе know? `, `Can wе know for cеrtain? `, `How do wе know? `, Arе askеd in еpistеmology. Philosophy of sciеncе is an offshoot of еpistеmology. Currеnt bibliographiеs and indicеs classify this nеw philosophical fiеld as a spеcial branch of еpistеmology. Its invеstigation is focusеd strictly and spеcifically on sciеntific knowlеdgе, according to thе modеrn undеrstanding of sciеncе, formalizеd into sciеntific laws and thеoriеs. It takеs for its subjеct-mattеr all еmpirical sciеncеs, thеir mеthods and languagе. Its growth as anothеr fiеld of philosophical invеstigation comеs from thе rеalization that thеrе arе logical, еpistеmological and mеtaphysical problеms pеculiar to еmpirical sciеncеs.
Onе may say that thе distinction bеtwееn еpistеmology and philosophy of sciеncе is that thе formеr is broad in scopе whilе thе lattеr is not. Еpistеmology includеs all kinds of knowlеdgе, both ordinary and laboratory еxpеriеncе, whilе philosophy of sciеncе rеfеrs only to еmpirical knowlеdgе. It might crеatе thе imprеssion, thеrеforе, that philosophy of sciеncе is lеss complicatеd than еpistеmology. On thе contrary, thе vеry sourcе of thе difficulty in dеfining philosophy of sciеncе is that its problеms arе both too gеnеral and too spеcial. Problеms, for еxamplе, on mеthodology, facts and thеoriеs can еithеr bе mеtaphysical or еpistеmological, ontological or logical. A. Danto acknowlеdgеs thе difficulty of drawing boundariеs to strictly sеparatе philosophy of sciеncе from philosophy, sciеncе and history of sciеncе .
Currеnt discussions and dеbatе bеtwееn rеlativists and positivists bring diffеrеnt notions of thе naturе of philosophy of sciеncе . Thе undеrstanding of its naturе will continuе to dеvеlop as discussions and dеbatеs continuе. For thе momеnt, this study undеrstands philosophy of sciеncе as an attеmpt to rеconstruct thе principlеs by mеans of which thе pursuit of sciеncе might bе possiblе as an activity whosе mеthods arе suitablе to attain its goals, whatеvеr thеy might bе. Othеrwisе, sciеncе cannot propеrly bе rеgardеd as a rational activity . It sееks to show in which this rationality liеs, what marks it off from guеsswork and psеudo-sciеncе and makеs its prеdictions and tеchnologiеs worthy of confidеncе, and whеthеr its thеoriеs can bе takеn

Historical places in the United States

Historical Places in the United States
The United States of America is a country that takes pride in the rich cultural and historical legacy she has carved for herself and the rest of the world. A legacy that is deeply rooted in the pioneering role played by the founding fathers of the nation in bequeathing unto this generation and succeeding generations the virtues of freedom, justice and liberty. It is in acknowledgement of the foregoing that the National Memorial in Washington is dedicated to the memory of the numerous national patriots of which the legendary Abraham Lincoln features prominently.
Suffice to conduct a brief historical trace of the life of this titan of the new American heritage. Growing from a very humble beginning, the great Abraham Lincoln was not accustomed to the luxury of a rosy life. Typical of his generation, he was a farm boy, who never resigned to fate. Through diligence and perseverance, he worked hard to develop his academic and professional lives. He was known to be an eloquent speaker, who combined his passion for scholarship with a resolute work ethic and pursued a legal career, then a political one from the Illinois state legislature to the U.S. Congress. Lincoln was a man whose passion and enthusiasm knew no bounds.
Right in the heart of the National Memorial is a section dedicated to the ever-loving memory of this great American citizen. The message is presented in an elaborate work of art which is described as follows: on top of the Gettysburg address in the central group is a presentation of the values of Freedom and Liberty which is being presented by the Angel of Truth to a slave. In the same painting, it is also seen that the fetters of bondage are falling from the arms and feet of the slave. The virtues are under the protective guard of two sibyls who are assigned the responsibility of safeguarding these virtues.
Justice and Law are presented on the left hand side, with the sword of justice centrally positioned on one hand where as the other hand firmly holds the Scroll of the Law, with two sibyls seated below her feet engaged in the process of interpreting the law with two torch-bearing figures adjacent representing the importance of intelligence in the process in the justice dispensation process.
The subject of immortality is highlighted with a laurel wreath crowning the figure at the central part with Faith, Hope and Charity standing adjacent. I became unusually attracted to the vessels of wine and oil positioned next to the figure. My enquiry revealed that it is a representation of an endless everlasting life. In a magnificent reunion, the angel of Truth brings the Northern and Southern parts of the country together in a spirit of nationhood. The artwork in the memorial is a personification of timeless principles that have defined the direction of the American heritage. In a similar fashion, the message presented brings to forth the beauty of intellectual aesthetics by uniting the

Role of religion in elections

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

The last Republican Revolution occurred ten years ago, and it turned off the voters. Moderate Republicans in Congress, especially from the Northeast, will play an important role in holding off extremist legislation. A Republican-appointed Supreme Court may chip away at Roe v. Wade but is not likely to reverse it; the Court may also find itself forced to find some middle ground on the civil union issue. Arlen Specter, as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, can be expected to resist the appointment of ideological conservatives, if only to minimize Democratic filibusters.
Democrats who wanted to do away with the electoral college after Al Gore’s win of the popular vote in 2000 may feel more subdued after George Bush’s three-and-a-half million “mandate.” Who wants the country to be controlled by the red states in the South and the West without the “containment” achieved by the electoral college? On the other hand, they may want to give better expression to the blue voters in the red areas. Eventually we will probably come to some form of proportional voting, either by congressional districts as in Maine and Nebraska, or (even better) by allocating the states’
votes as in the Colorado referendum.
Proportional voting, as Lani Guinier pointed out, enables people to say how they want to be represented rather than “be districted.” Both parties, of course, will be turning to their computers to see how they would have fared under these various plans.
Going into the 2004 presidential election we knew that the country was almost equally divided between red and blue, conservative and liberal, Fox News and CNN, church-goers and college graduates, those who want to reduce the role of government to punishing wrongdoers and those who see government as responsible for the general welfare. (Yes, that’s how majorities of each of these groups voted, according to the polls.)
Al Gore was too quick to be a good sport, not only conceding the election for the sake of “national unity” and “the legitimacy of the presidency,” but declining to lead a government in exile, a shadow cabinet, or even a loyal opposition. Bush took advantage of national unity after 9/11 to impose Draconian new laws like the Patriot Act; his Congressional allies refused to develop legislation collaboratively and played fast and loose with voting procedures when it was to their advantage; and he dictated policy to the agencies of the federal government, creating dismay among professionals in the EPA, the Department of Energy, the Forest Service and the Park Service, the State Department, and the Pentagon. (Lazarsfeld, et al [1944])
We knew the general demographics, too. The “blue” areas were on the west coast, the Northeast, the large industrial cities, African-American communities (both rural and urban), and university towns across the country. They included many who have been disadvantaged by corporate power (labor, African Americans, Hispanics,

Seize the Moment

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Life can be anything but ordinary and routine if only one is able to open their eyes and see all the opportunities that lay around them. The daily grind can indeed be taxing, mentally and emotionally, and at times, it feels like it’s never going to end. But one small thought, one minute action can change it all and make the difference. Seizing the small moments that life offers can change one’s life for the better and make one realize the wonder and happiness that permeates life.
Imagine making a cup of coffee in the morning. Having timed your routine perfectly, you know that there is enough time to brew a good cup of coffee to wake you up. But instead of making coffee in the morning, what would happen if instead you went out of your way to pick up a cup of coffee on your way to work? Perhaps a chance meeting or running into an old friend. Maybe a newspaper headline would catch your eye or you see something that brightens your day and affects your whole outlook for the rest of the day. Your entire day would be different all from that one change to your routine.
Taking a different route home, even if all it does is offer an extra minute to think, might make the biggest difference in the days that follow. It could change the way you interact with others, the way you think, and the way you perceive the world around you.
Those who know how to seize each moment do so by acting immediately on their impulses and not being practical or routine about their decisions. Acting on impulse and doing what feel right at that very moment is one way of taking control of your life and not allowing years of conditioning in society to guide you. Seizing the opportunity often takes much courage and requires one to step out of their comfort zone. it takes risk to do something out of the ordinary and to break one’s routine.
However the risk will almost always be worth it. What would life be without the nuances that change it from one day to the next? It is not the daily work schedule that keeps one moving but the hope for the short holidays and weekends that keep one’s optimism up and make life bearable. Seizing the small moments that life offers can change one’s life for the better and make one realize the wonder and happiness that permeates life. Life can be anything but ordinary but only if we are willing to make it so.

Information systems

February 15, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

In our day and age, a typical challenge that businesses that are yearning to remain competitive in both their domestic and external markets are grappling with is the question of information systems. The basis for this contention is the proven efficacy of previously well managed information systems that reflected in the overall march to revolutionizing business from the corporate view. Information Systems is a managerial policy that is hinged on the continuous act of gathering data and recording of data in the overall business operation. It inevitably captures areas bordering on both the manual and automated procedural activities of the organization.
Modern enterprises are now well informed about the need to embrace realistic organizational information systems that will serve varying purposes including the ability to fine tune with the robust demands of doing business in the twenty first century. It is against this background that this essay will be conducting an exhaustive analysis into what is already available by way of existing models and concurrently redefine what the prospects are for all stakeholders in the corporate world.
Overview
Recent studies have brought out compelling evidence that is premised on the sensitivity of the fragile chord that links information systems with the manner in which modern enterprises can function both from within and without. In a milestone study (Aiko n.d), assets to this striking relationship from the position of a cause-effect perspective, by laying claims to the fact an organization will undergo massive transformation during and after well planned and implemented information systems policy.
It has even become an intricate part of the relationship of managerial strategies and labor productivity. To this end, Brynjolfsson & Mendelson (1993) found that this effect is not completely isolated to individual enterprises but also extends to the characteristic output that has become associated with even inter firm operations.

Analysis
Viewed holistically, the location of information as well as the location of decision rights are inherently embedded in the structure of modern day organizational information systems. It is the extension of the move that begun over a decade ago, to relinquish business operations from the obsolete policies of leaning towards the hierarchical decision making system . This concept that has massively altered massive production displayed by large vertically-integrated hierarchically-organized firms; in connection with the sub definitions of what has become attributed to the Silicon Valley (Brynjolfsson & Mendelson 1993).
In the most absolute form managers of modern enterprises have relentlessly sought to knit together information, incentives and decision rights in order to chart an innovative cause that has the propensity to demonstrate dynamic motivated insights leading to a repositioning of which ever direction the enterprise in question seeks to pursue.
