Hurricane

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis 1 Comment

Are very interesting when viewed and followed through the satellite but they are very destructive in really life situation. They have got many setbacks behind them. They are among the deathliest forces on earth that bring about many side effects to places where they occur. A hurricane can benefit people by a heavy downfall of rain during the dry season, thus enabling farmers to plant their crops and benefit from the improved yields of harvests, but on the other hand it has more shortcomings than benefits. The main drawbacks of hurricanes include the following.

The first and most important side effect of hurricane is high winds. This is the most influential factor about the effects of hurricane, since it clearly gives an indication about the power of the storm, giving the bearing about the flow and the likely damage that is going to arise.

The second drawback of hurricanes is storm surge and tidal flooding. This has been proved to be the most distressing and seen side effect of hurricane. It comes in the form of floods of water that come to the shores with a land falling hurricane. It has been noted that storm surge and tidal flooding are responsible to a big percentage of approximately 92 percent of the deaths that occur due to hurricanes.

The third negative side effect of hurricane is associated with tornadoes. It is one of the negative side effects of hurricanes with the least side effects. They usually occur in hurricane due to the high intensities of energy that arises from the falling of a hurricane. The tornadoes that are mostly experienced in hurricanes lack enough strength of creating a huge impact.

The other side effect of hurricanes is that they cause heavy downfall of rain and flooding. This side effect is mostly not well known by most people. After the occurrence of a hurricane and after its associated winds have passed, heavy amounts of rainfall occurred becoming a major factor and it causes flooding with hurricane.

Hurricanes can form in any part of the world from the west coast of Africa to the gulf in America. The most common places where hurricanes occur include the Cape Verde Island, very strong hurricanes occur here. The other common place where hurricanes occur is the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricanes have been common in this place because of its water temperatures that favor the occurrence of a hurricane.

The development of a hurricane can take many days to develop depending with the sea surface temperatures and the upper level wind conditions.

Two Kinds by Amy Tan

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Amy Tan is a Chinese-American writer, who wrote many novels; though one of her famous ones is considered to be The Joy Luck Club. It is interesting to know that many of her short stories included in this book were published separately one from another even before the book in whole was released. This piece of literature is considered a great success as it is being not a simple book, but with the autobiographical background.
The writer’s family background is colourful, and Amy has described much about her mother’s and grandmother’s past in writing her novel, especially in The Joy Luck Club. The book has been a bestseller for over a year and then was made into a successful movie called The Kitchen God’s Wife. So as it was mentioned before, it was the first time Amy Tan has written autobiographically.
The short story called Two Kinds is the last one in Amy Tan’s successful book The Joy Luck Club. The writer supposed that her book would be read as a collection of interrelated stories, but it is often perceived as a novel. Several of the stories appeared in the periodical Atlantic Monthly separately. The short story Two Kinds was firstly published in this magazine in February 1989; even it happened one month before the whole collection was released.
The story Two Kinds, like all other stories in the book, is concerned with the complicated relationships between two generations – but particularly, mothers and daughters. The author’s main subject is the nation’s distance between mothers born in China and cut from their native culture for many years, and their American born daughters, which have to balance between their Chinese ancestry and American expectations for gaining the success.
The narrator of Two Kinds is Jing-mei, who resists her mother’s great wish to remake her into a musical prodigy. She wants her daughter to be talented and to compete with one of her friend’s daughters. Jing-mei mentions these events after a term of more than twenty years; the writer still tries to understand her mother’s intensions.
It is interesting that the mother and the daughter reveal their inner personality with the help of the language, actions, gestures and thoughts. It seems that the conflict goes on between the two women, whose cultures and aspirations do not coincide. It may be said that Two Kinds centers on the conflict between two kinds of women and two kinds of daughters.
These two women – Jing-mei and her mother – are being two different kinds of women, because they have almost opposite life experience. Before America the mother has lost much in China: her parents, her home, her first husband, and two twin baby girls. But she never regretted and looked back at the past. She is sure that America is the country of opportunities. She tells her daughter the following words that express all her thoughts: ‘…you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get good retirement.

Fear and motivation theories

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

A major fundamental basis for the development of motivational theory is premised on the notion of the direct interconnectivity of the integrated wholeness of the human organism. That is to say that, a given behavioral motivation of whatever form needs to be seen within the framework through which a series of human needs are expressed and satisfied. Still within this context it should also be noted that every human act derives motivation from a wide array of factors. In order words the every act is said to be the direct product of a motivation as well which can also be a motivation by itself.
Humans as organisms have a series of needs, which are most often than not competing for satisfaction either in a chronological order or simultaneously. A major question that has engaged the attention of researching psychologists over the years has being how these needs are often satisfied. The outcome of one of such research findings revealed that human needs are expressed in the so-called hierarchies of pre-potency. The underlining logic of this theory is that the expression of a particular need is often built on the satisfaction of a previous more potent need explaining why the human organism is said to be in a state of continuous want. Needs are not independent entities and can therefore not be treated as isolated force.
Drive theories formed the foundational basis of pioneering research that sought to look at the direct linkage of fear as a motivational factor. Among other things a bulk of the pioneering work alluded to the fact that action is a direct product of fear. A cardinal point of the theory is that fear has the propensity to bring out an average drive state. One of the models forecasted that a suitable amount of fear would be persuasive to trigger a drive state in the recipient of any transmitted message consequently sets the tone for drive theories rely on an inverted U-shape characteristic relationship between fear and motivation for attitude change. Notwithstanding the above, a holistic unavailability of support for the inverted U-shaped model has resulted in many of these theories being dismissed.
