The ins and outs of TV Advertising

November 17, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

We have all been affected by TV advertising at some point in our lives. It is one of the most popular forms of product promotion in the UK and countries all over the world and has a proven track record of translating into increased sales volume and therefore more profit. TV advertising is very much the Holy Grail of the marketing industry. If you have the budget then it is one of the safest bets for promotions and product launches.

Not all sorts of TV advertising are the same. For instance the market is one where the practice of price discrimination is the chosen marketing pricing strategy. Put simply, companies charge a different price for the same product or service at different times. As with anything from public transport to holiday accommodation, TV advertising has peak and off-peak rates. Primetime programmes are therefore considerably more expensive to advertise on than daytime or late night television. Obviously things like the X Factor attract huge audiences meaning you are getting your ad broadcast to far more people so it is worth the extra outlay.

Obviously the choice of time for TV advertising depends on other things as well as raw ratings and viewer figures. You have to identify a target demographic. For instance if you are aiming a product at pensioners such as specialist car insurance or life insurance then it makes sense to put your ad on during the day as a large proportion of the viewers will be retired.

Whatever slot you choose, the main priority when it comes to TV advertising is to grab the attention of the viewer. Your particular TV ad has to be memorable. Whether it has an infectious jingle, memorable slogan or a funny or shocking concept, it has to stick in the mind of a viewer. Obviously your hands are tied by what your business activity is. For instance TV advertising for charities aimed at stopping child abuse is very different from comedy film trailers. However in general try to be different when it comes to TV advertising.
